Bloomer Homers Twice as Chargers Split Season-Opening DH

The Carl Sandburg College softball team opened its season with a doubleheader split Sunday at Coastal Alabama-East as the Chargers kicked off their spring break trip to the Florida panhandle.

The Chargers earned a 10-5 victory behind a trio of homers in Game 1 before losing Game 2 8-7 in walk-off fashion.

Key Moment
Following a leadoff single from Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone), Emily Bloomer (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) popped a home run to center for a 3-2 lead the Chargers would never relinquish.

Sandburg Standout
Catcher Erin Flairty (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a home run, double, two RBIs and three runs. Flairty’s two-out, two-run homer in the sixth put Sandburg ahead 6-2.

Key Moment
The Chargers took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but Coastal Alabama-East scored twice in each of its last two at-bats. The Warhawks plated the tying run in the seventh on a fielding error after a base hit to right, then scored the game-winner on a steal of home with two out.

Sandburg Standout
Bloomer homered again and doubled twice, finishing 3 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. Her leadoff homer to center in the third gave the Chargers an early 2-0 lead.
